Backed
by players from D.C. rock stalwarts, Coulter’s band delivers
authentic rock ‘n roll. Drawing on influences as varied
as Bob Dylan and Johnny
Cash to Mott
the Hoople and Squeeze
they’ve created an organic sound that seems familiar but
is definitely new.
While in college, Coulter’s band, The
Inserts, gained recognition winning the local CBS affiliate’s
“Rising Stars of Washington”
contest, where he performed live on TV. When The Inserts broke
up shortly thereafter, Coulter gave up playing his music for many
years.
After
a series of personal challenges deftly acknowledged in his songs,
Coulter returned to writing music in 1999. While vacationing in
Mexico that year he met and performed with keyboardist/producer
Steve Thoma (Fleetwood
Mac, Glenn Frey), bassist
Tim
Scott, and former Paul McCartney
drummer Denny
Seiwell. With Thoma’s guidance, Coulter soon
recorded the demo tracks in California that would later become
the foundation for his debut album.
All
of the 12 songs on the self-titled CD were written by Coulter
and produced in part by Thoma and
by five-time Washington Area Music Award (Wammie) winner Marco
Delmar.
